You shouldn't pay $50 a month to hear from your users

September 6, 2026 · Say Toucan

If you make something people use, you need somewhere for them to tell you what to build next. A feedback board: users post ideas, others upvote, you sort out what matters and show what's coming.

It is not a complicated thing. It's a list with votes, a few statuses, and a way to tell people when you shipped.

So it's strange how much it costs.

The category priced itself out of reach

Somewhere along the way, feedback boards became "product management platforms." The popular options now commonly run $25 to $50 a month to start, and the best-known names climb into the hundreds once you want a second board or to put it on your own domain. Prices go up quietly. Free trials turn into invoices. One tool we know raised its prices and wouldn't refund the people who'd already paid.

For an indie developer, a side project, a small team, or a nonprofit, that math doesn't work. You're not going to pay $600 a year to collect feature requests for an app that makes $0 so far.

So most people just… don't. They run a messy spreadsheet, a Discord channel, a pile of emails — and lose track of what their users actually want.

Who Say Toucan is for

Say Toucan is for the people that pricing left behind:

  • Solo developers and indie hackers who want a real board, not a spreadsheet.
  • Small teams and startups who'd rather spend the $50 on literally anything else.
  • Open-source maintainers and nonprofits running on goodwill.
  • Anyone migrating off a tool that got too expensive.

If you have users and want to hear from them without a budget meeting, it's for you.

What you actually get

The whole core is free, and "free" means the actual product, not a crippled demo:

  • Unlimited boards, requests, votes, and threaded comments
  • A public roadmap that updates itself as you move things along
  • A changelog your users can subscribe to
  • Real admin tools: statuses, categories, tags, assignees, merging duplicates, private notes
  • Import your whole public board from Upvoty in one step

Pro is **$2 a month** — not $25, not $50 — and all it adds is the stuff that's genuinely yours to own: a custom domain, your own branding, and private invite-only boards. Your logo and colors are free either way.

Honest about the honesty

We keep the free tier free for as long as it's sustainable for us to keep it that way, and we say so out loud on the pricing page. Pro exists mostly to help cover server costs, not to fund a sales team. There's no "contact us for pricing," no seat minimums, no surprise renewal at 3x.

You shouldn't need a budget to find out what your users want. Say Toucan do it — start a free board and share the link.
